Obtaining the NIE

You are going to start your stay at the San Jorge University in Spain, as your stay is longer than three months, you must request your registration in the Central Registry of Foreigners where you will obtain a registration certificate and a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE). As you are citizens of the Union, you do not have to complete any prior procedures; the entire process will be carried out at the corresponding immigration office.

Procedure

Documents you need to present:

Valid passport or identity card (original and copy)
Application form (Ex-18) (original and photocopy)
Registration for studies at the San Jorge University, the International Office can provide you with this.
4 passport-sized photographs
European health card or private insurance policy that covers all risks in Spain during the entire period of study (original and copy).
Proof that the student has sufficient financial means during their stay in Zaragoza.

Appointment at the immigration office

Once you have obtained the resolution, you have not yet completed the process, as it is necessary to pay the corresponding fee and appear at the Police Documentation Unit for fingerprinting and subsequent issuance of the NIE.

Obtaining the NIE

European students

If you are a national of one of the following countries, you do not need to apply for a visa. You may travel to Spain using your national identity card and/or passport: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Once you arrive in Spain and begin your studies at the University, you will need to apply for the Certificate of Registration of Citizens of the Union, issued by the Immigration Office in Zaragoza. This certificate includes your Foreign Identity Number (NIE), which will serve as your official identification number during your stay.

Summary of the NIE process

Book an appointment (cita previa) at the Immigration Office.
Prepare the required documentation (passport/ID, enrolment certificate, financial means, health insurance).
Attend the appointment and submit your documents.
Receive your NIE and registration certificate.

Non-European students

Non-European students must obtain a student visa before travelling to Spain. This process is done at the nearest Spanish Consulate in your country.

After being admitted, USJ will send your Letter of Acceptance, required for the visa application. The visa allows your legal entry and stay in Spain.

Once in Spain, you must apply for the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) at the Zaragoza Foreigner Office. The International Office will explain the full procedure during the Welcome Session.

Double European / non-European nationality

If you hold dual nationality and one of your passports is issued by a European Union country, you do not need to apply for a student visa to study in Spain. As an EU citizen, the regulations and procedures described for European students will apply to you.

To ensure a smooth arrival, the International Relations Unit will guide you through the steps relevant to EU students, including registration procedures and documentation required upon arrival.
